I AM NOT A FAN OF DEMOCRACY. ARE YOU?
Ever since my social studies teacher in my secondary school taught me about the real meaning of democracy, I have never been a fan of this system of government :). Some people ask me why I don't place so much emphasis on democracy and the election. Yes that's true, I prefer not to place so much emphasis on democracy because I am not really a fan of "democracy". I rather focus on the real issues facing our everyday lives instead of talking about politics and politicians. I have a whole lot of reasons why I don't believe in "democracy" but here are the summary of my reasons:
Money: The campaign process is way expensive: A lot of money is being spent for campaigning. Money that could be used to construct better projects that would benefit the lives of ordinary people.
Time: A lot of time is being wasted. Politicians spend a lot of time dancing on the streets for months, sharing bags of rice, and blocking our ears with noise about their promises. Notice most of these politicians kids do not come out to campaign with them. Naw, they are studying or working in prestigious institutions abroad. Our election process usually takes 5months out of the year. Everything virtually freezes including useful projects during this time.
Trust: I don't trust politicians. How can you trust someone based on what he promises you. Are you sure they will keep their promise. And if they don't keep it, you will have to wait another 4years again to elect a new leader. I believe the system is flawed.
Priority: Democracy focuses mainly on the presidential campaign. Do you know the arm of government that affects you more directly? It's your local government. Yes that's right, your local government. After the presidency dishes out money for projects, that money trickles down to your local govt area. Now, most people don't even know who their local government chairman is. Hence, most of them freely embezzle funds because they are less seen and accountable. Why can't elections focus on these people who are closest to the voters.
There are a lot more reasons which I would not like to go into now. Regardless of my opinion, I encourage people to go out and vote massively. There is a hidden reason why the world is closely watching this particular election. This has been the most important election in Nigerian history and it will surely define the course of this country's future. Thank God this election came and went peacefully. Whoever wins this election, I wish him the best of luck. I hope the newly elected president fulfills all the promises he gave to the masses. I also employ all Nigerians to begin to think outside of the box. Are we practicing the best system of government for our country? Are there better systems out there? Think
Perhaps, the next four years of democracy in Nigeria will answer that question. It will either prove my social studies teacher right or wrong. I hope it proves him wrong.

Do you not know? Have you
not heard? The LORD is the
everlasting God, the Creator of
the ends of the earth. He will
not grow tired or weary, and
his understanding no one can

Those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
